Sometimes the biggest challenge in nursery design isn’t the style or the color or even choosing the right products. It’s the floor plan. The nursery is often the smallest room in the home, a repurposed guest room or office, or even a shared space. In the case of this recent Virtual Nursery Design, the client came to us with a small nursery space that didn’t have a closet.

It’s not common for a bedroom to be built without a closet, but it does happen, especially in older homes that have gone through many remodels. This was the case for this client—the only room they had to use as the nursery was only about 10 feet by 10 feet and it was missing the closet. That meant we had to figure out a way to not only fit the crib, dresser and glider, but include some type of storage as well.

Luckily, this client was open to doing custom built-ins! We were able to use the back wall where the crib goes to build out small but impactful cabinets to serve as a closet. The client sent us a photo of the progress below.

After we finalized the design of the custom built-ins and the striped wallpaper, we were able to focus on the nursery furniture and decor. Since this is a small room, we chose a light wood convertible crib that starts out as a bassinet and then converts to the full size shown in the design board. We didn’t have room for a full size dresser, so we chose a small but gorgeous textured blue dresser. We added in a neutral motorized glider and an ottoman with storage inside, which is already a bonus in a small nursery space.

Then for the details! We wanted to add a little more dimension to this space and prevent it from feeling too nautical, so we included some soft sage green and gold as well. The sailboat artwork over the crib has that touch of green which then balances the sage green sconces on the opposite wall. We just love how this nursery design came together!

The days of neutral nurseries are over! Well, at least for this client. We were contacted to create a Virtual Nursery Design for a client here in California who wanted a bolder and more traditional nursery. During our design meeting, she told us right off the bat that she wanted a sweet feminine wallpaper and some type of paneling or molding. She wasn’t super keen on baby pink so we suggested a deeper mauve instead. From there, we ran with the design and came up with the gorgeous concept!

It took a while to find the perfect wallpaper because we wanted one with a delicate floral that had tones of both mauve and slate blue. We eventually doing the perfect one, and the white background helps to keep the nursery light and bright. The client wanted to do paneling around the entire room, but the budget just didn’t allow for that. So instead, we suggested chair rail and crown molding around the room with paint on the lower section to mimic a full paneling look.

This room has two windows, but since there is so much mauve on the walls and doors, we wanted to make sure that the space didn’t feel too dark. We kept the rest of the design mostly neutral. We anchored the room with a large neutral rug with a medallion pattern—the traditional design not only works with the aesthetic, but the pattern will also help hide stains.

For the nursery furniture, we didn’t want to just do white. We wanted to bring in more depth and interest, so we chose an antique gold crib and a stunning slate blue dresser. That dresser ended up being our favorite part of the whole design!

The rest of the details help to balance the room like the textured boucle storage ottoman, faux sheepskin accent rug and the linen texture blackout drapery. There are more gold touches as well to bring it all together. We just love how this nursery design came out!

I have to say, we’re just loving how many clients are asking for green nursery designs! Not that long ago, most green options for nurseries were either mint green or a deeper emerald green, and even still, there wasn’t a lot of decor available at all. It’s so exciting as a designer to see how color trends change. We’re lucky to live in a time when there are so many options available, especially at affordable prices. So when this Virtual Design client came to us wanting a sage green and neutral nursery, we didn’t miss a beat!

We always start our nursery virtual designs with the floor plan, which you can see below. This room had plenty of space for all the furniture we needed, and we were even able to fit in an armoire for extra storage. There is a single large window, which gave us the opportunity to add nice window treatments to frame the space. We added a full size dresser, which we always recommend if you can fit one, along with some wall hooks near the entry to drop a diaper bag.

Our client wanted a soothing space that was neutral enough to use again for any future children. She loved the idea of using neutrals and sage green together, and liked the light wood look. We chose a light wood crib and armoire, but used white for the dresser to break things up. The neutral glider also adds contrast next to the light wood crib. If you look closely, you’ll also see that the ottoman has a little light wood accent, bringing it all together.

The wallpaper in this nursery design is such a fun one! We love using nature-inspired patterns, especially for gender neutral nurseries. This particular wallpaper is soft and sophisticated, so it won’t feel “babyish” when the room gets transitioned later on. We love how this nursery design turned out!

As a mother, I have always viewed my kids as royalties, especially when they were still babies. When designing a room for a newborn, some parents decide on “cartoonish” and overly fluffy décor. I myself like to create just the appropriate balance of playful and polished. Although aesthetics is what first comes to mind when mentioning a sophisticated nursery, there is also a practical side to it. Elegantly designed nurseries age more gracefully, meaning they can be adapted to kids’ needs and tastes as they grow to toddlers and to school-age. They are also characterized by soft and gentle colors which make them more pleasant for the baby’s eyes. Finally, they never go out of vogue. If you’re on the same page, here are some great ideas for creating a refined nursery.

Go with a single color. Creating a monochromatic nursery can be a challenge, but if you do it right, it will be the ideal backdrop for an elegant design. If you decide on a single color, make sure you use various slight variations of it to introduce some contrast and interest. Mixing several different neutrals will help you achieve a similar effect, too.

Mix up the textures. Combinations of different textures will make the room look warmer, cozier and, of course, more sophisticated. Just imagine a raw wood crib, smooth hardwood floor and lacquered dresser combined with soft round rugs, plush sheepskin throws, faux fur details and interesting pillows.

Choose a wonderful crib. The crib is the centerpiece of every nursery, so you should be very careful when choosing it. There are so many beautiful and “out of the box” crib designs available that you will surely find something to match your taste while also being functional.

Install a striking lighting fixture. Even a common room without many details can be elevated with the simple addition of a striking chandelier. Depending of the rest of the décor, you can go for a Victorian-style crystal chandelier or simple and elegant pendant lamps.

Canopies are made of dreams. Crib canopies always make the nursery feel lighter and more romantic. They go especially well with cribs of inconspicuous design, because they give them the edge they previously didn’t have. Canopies can be plain and simple or ornate and decorative. They are available in various colors and styles, and they can be wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted or attached directly onto the crib. A crib canopy is also very useful for rooms that are too bright, because it creates a dimmed environment inside the crib, making it easier for the baby to fall asleep.

Direct your focus on a wall. Every room can benefit from an accent wall, and the nursery is no exception. The wall where the attention will be focused should be the one behind one side of the crib (preferably the longer one). As you are aiming for subtlety rather than pizzazz, decorate the wall with a wallpaper of the same or similar color as the rest of the room, with the addition of beautiful details (e.g. star pattern). You can also hang up artwork – use the color or the style of the frames as a unifying element.

Throw in some vintage finds. Vintage furniture pieces and accessories have a way of enriching the room with a whole new vibe, and they often look irresistibly elegant and sophisticated. The best thing about them is that you don’t have to spend a fortune on them. You probably already have old furniture pieces in your attic that can be refreshed. Also, you can visit your local flea market and find some great rocking chairs, armchairs, dressers and armoires. Old armchairs can be reupholstered with elegantly-patterned fabrics, while wooden pieces can be either repainted or whitewashed to look more antique. Just watch out for lead paint and make sure each piece is safe.

Metallic shine. Metallic pieces, especially ones made of warm metals (e.g. copper and rose gold) bring in a special, luxurious feel into the nursery. They can be introduced with lamps, picture frames, wallpaper details, or even crib rails.

These ideas will help you design a unique nursery that will be a true castle chamber for your little prince or princess.
