There have been a lot of nursery design reveals coming at you lately! Because of Covid, we had to postpone a lot of photoshoots, and now they are all piling up. I’m making my way through all the photos and finally getting these reveals up on the blog!

This gorgeous butterfly nursery was for a client in Orange County. She was having twin girls and wanted a space that was soft, sophisticated and had a butterfly theme. Her home was very traditional as well, so we designed the space to flow with her home by using some more traditional elements.

The biggest challenge with most twins nurseries is fitting in two cribs. Luckily, this space was on the larger side and we were able to fit not only twi cribs, but a changing table and daybed as well. The cribs are both a stunning warm silver finish—it’s hard to tell by the photos, but the finish is more like a champagne silver and so unbelievably pretty. The upholstery on the back panels is also different depending on where you’re standing in the room, and changes from a light pink to mauve-lavender.

Having a daybed in a nursery can be an amazing perk if you can fit it. In this case, we left out a glider since my client wanted to use the daybed to nurse both babies at the same time (lots of elbow room!). It’s also great because she can sleep in there while nursing.

When I was posting little updates on this nursery on Instagram, I was getting a lot of requests for this wall color. It’s a super pale mauve/blush, and it’s gorgeous in person. The color is Dunn Edwards Windmill.

One of my favorites things in this nursery is the drapery. These are fully custom blackout curtains with a sheer layer on the inside. I love using double layer curtains in nurseries because it gives you maximum flexibility to adjust the lighting. We used a pink pleat header on these to give them a more formal feel, and hung them high up to give the room a grander and taller look.

Because we had to fit in the two cribs and daybed, we didn’t have a ton of space for a larger dresser. So instead, we went with a smaller changing table. There is a full closet as well for storage and the daybed works as a large surface to change on as well. Those custom knobs are gold with tiny pink crystals, and they are amazing!

To complement the butterfly wallpaper, we also chose some custom 3D butterfly art pieces. And don’t worry, they are framed with plexiglass and heavily attached to the wall. We used heavy duty anchors, earthquake hooks and installed a lock at the bottom as well which prevents it from being lifted at the bottom. They don’t move AT ALL.

My client had a love of antiques and had a huge collection in her home. She wanted to make sure we included something antique in the nursery, so we chose this gorgeous antique wall mirror. It’s important to be careful with antiques and vintage items in a nursery since they can have lead paint or a lack of structural integrity, so always check everything carefully. I would never recommend using anything antique or vintage that the baby can chew on (like toys or smaller furniture).

This year has been the year of butterflies! I have had so many clients asking for a butterfly theme nursery, or wanting to add butterfly decor into their room. A butterfly nursery theme is a fun way to add playfulness without necessarily having to commit to bold colors and a juvenile design. Butterflies can read very sophisticated as well (as you’ll see by some of the decor below). I love finding those decor pieces that land in that sweet spot between whimsy and sophisticated.

When you hear the word “theme”, don’t fret! To design a themed nursery, all you need is a few well-selected pieces to work into the overall design of the room. I am NOT talking about a head-to-toe theme here. I talk a lot about this in my book if you need help figuring out how to create a nursery theme without going overboard! But either way, here is a little roundup of some of my favorite butterfly nursery decor:

1. Watercolor Butterfly Print: The softness of this pastel watercolor art immediately makes me want to put this in a nursery. I love the soft orange, blue-greens, yellow and pink. This could easily hang on its own or as a part of a gallery wall, and it’s super affordable too.

2. Butterfly Pillow: This sherbet colored, playful butterfly pillow will add pop of color to a butterfly themed design without it feeling tacky. This one is handmade, 100% cotton and would be completely adorable in a nursery or in a reading nook. I’ve also felt these in person, and they are super squishy and soft!

3. Gray Metallic Butterfly Wallpaper: You may recognize this wallpaper from the sophisticated butterfly nursery I’ve been working on recently. Let me tell you, it is SO gorgeous in person. It has subtle gold metallic butterflies on a gray taupe background and the metallic details reflect the light stunningly. It’s elegant and works well as an accent wall.

4. Butterfly Mirror: An elegant mirror with a twist. This handcrafted metallic gold mirror is like a piece of art. Because this piece is so sophisticated, it can definitely grow with your child and space.

5. Butterfly Art Canvas: Modern and elegant, this gold abstract butterfly art paired with the black frame will make a statement in your room. It’s printed on museum-quality canvas and there are lots of other frame options too.

6. Butterfly Lamp: This table lamp is right between whimsical and elegant and a great option for a sophisticated little girl’s room. The base has a gold leaf finish and the offset glass butterflies cast a pretty sparkle when the light hits it. This lamp is definitely on my short list.

7: Butterfly Knobs: These little bronze butterflies make it easy to customize a dresser or any item that has knobs. Small changes like switching out knobs can help pull a design together and really add a personal touch.

8. Embellished Butterfly Pillow: Neutral in color, big in statement! This is a luxury pillow and a bit of an investment. Though it makes a big statement, the metallic bead work and neutral linen make it very versatile. I used this pillow for a client recently, and it’s one of my favorites. The beadwork is really well-done!

9. Lavender Butterfly Art: This lavender butterfly wall art is sweet and modern, and it comes with a black and gold frame. This would be perfect by itself, though you could make a serious statement gallery wall with these as the collection offers 16 different colors.

10. Embroidered Butterfly Pillow: This pillow is part of a Riffle & Co x Loloi collab and it’s a good one! The colorful embroidered butterflies look classy and fun against the black background. Add this and a couple of other butterfly pieces and you can really change a space with a few statement items.

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you may have seen some behind-the-scenes videos of this nursery coming together. I used to do a ton of traditional nursery design years ago, like this pink and gold nursery, or this neutral and lavender nursery. Then the trends went more modern for a few years. But recently, it seems like some traditional design elements are coming back, at least with my clients here in Orange County. I’ve had a few clients ask for soft and more neutral traditional decor with glamorous and crystal accents, and of course, gold!

So all that said, here is a sneak peek of a more traditional girl’s nursery I’ve been working on! This design is super luxurious and almost everything in the room is custom. There’s only one crib in the design board, but this room is actually for twin girls, so there will be two cribs in the final room.

My client really wanted to have a butterfly nursery theme, but without being too heavy on the thematic elements. I chose a neutral butterfly wallpaper that has some metallic in it which looks so amazing as the light shifts in the room. We did a super pale mauve paint color to give the room some color, but nothing too bright or saturated.

The cribs and changing table are both custom pieces from Romina Furniture that are seriously so pretty. The finish is a rich warm grey tone with lots of depth. It’s so hard to tell by the design board, but the finish in person is amazing. The upholstered crib panels are a lilac pink color in a soft velvet fabric. The daybed is also a light mauve-pink velvet, and then we mirrored that same color in the sheer curtains that are underneath the heavier ivory blackout curtains. The dresser even has gold and crystal knobs!

To add just a little more butterfly decor, I chose some gorgeous custom butterfly art with plexiglass shadowboxes. We kept with the gold and did a vintage LaBarge mirror over the changing table, and then custom finished the chandelier in gold as well.

I was recently working on a nursery design for a client, and we did a little work in her toddler-aged daughter’s room as well. Her daughter loved butterflies, but we didn’t want to overwhelm the space with too much. I opted for some simple and very sophisticated butterfly art pieces, and only 2 of them, paired with some other complimentary artwork. When designed thoughtfully, a subtle play on the aesthetic can make just as much of an impact on the overall design.

In my search for pieces, I came across some absolutely stunning butterfly themed decor. There are so many tasteful options for more traditional themes. I look for pieces that still carry a sense of sophistication with just a touch of whimsy to elevate rather than cheapen the feel of the space. More juvenile accents can always be brought in with toys, books, etc. I wanted to share some of the sophisticated butterfly pieces with you since they are such a great example of how to create a themed less-is-more approach.

Wallpaper is always a great choice for introducing a style or pattern into a space (so long as you think you will love it longer-term). You can easily dictate the amount of pattern by choosing to paper one wall only. This Butterfly wallpaper is a great example of suggesting without overpowering. The neutral color palette helps to play down the pattern and promotes a more refined aesthetic. This paper would pair beautifully with a neutral and gold color palette!

Unlike wallpaper, it is often much more difficult to find themed lighting choices, especially ones that are sophisticated. This striking Brass Butterfly Pendant is an incredible find! I love using gold finishes to unite a lighting scheme. Accents of gold lighting help to add glamour to the design. The spherical shape is very much on trend at the moment and the scale of the pendant is a great size for a small nursery! Crib sheets are a great way to work in a pattern, a color, or a theme since there are endless customizable options available. Tip: Try browsing handmade shops found on Etsy too! Sheets can be easily changed out seasonly or more frequently when you are in need of a decor refresh. I love this Butterfly Crib Sheet because of the variety of colors present within the pattern. The butterflies have a hand-painted look, and don’t appear cartoony.Create a more minimal feel by using smaller butterfly accents and thoughtful selections. This Butterfly Tray is absolutely stunning and is available in a wide array of color combinations. The motif is a subtle but thoughtful touch that would add a bit of personality to a dresser top. The tray itself is acrylic, so it won’t break (which is great for a nursery). Place it on an ottoman or window seat for an easy little spot to place some water or baby bottles.

Artwork can make a huge statement in a nursery, and sometimes less is more. It is often one of the first elements the eye is drawn to. I love using a statement art piece to create a focal wall behind the crib. These Framed Butterfly Art Prints are great because they can be clustered in a group on larger walls for more impact. These are available in a selection of color combinations so you can mix and match to coordinate with your nursery palette—always a huge plus for a designer!

This Gold Butterfly Art Piece is another great example of uniquely themed artwork that makes a powerful statement. This is one of several intricate compositions from Scout Design Studio that uses butterflies to create a larger form. Although this artwork is more of an investment piece, one along a focal wall would be all you would need to make a statement. I also love the more earthy hues of this composition. This art piece would be stunning paired with bright white walls and sharp orange accents!
