Blush pink is one of the most frequently requested colors for a nursery design (when we’re not doing neutral). It’s so soft and pretty, and pairs with so many styles. Recently, a lot of clients have been opting for other colors instead of blush pink, like sage green or lavender. But we still have plenty of clients who love the soft and classic look of this sweet color. This Nursery Virtual Design client wanted a nursery for her daughter that was modern and flowed with her home.

As you can see below, this nursery floor plan was a little tricky. We always start by placing the crib in the safest spot, and then work around that. There really wasn’t much wall space even though the nursery is a good size, and we had a funny little angled wall to figure out. But we made it work so it will be a functional and safe nursery!

The rest of our client’s home was modern with textured wallpaper and silver accents, so we carried that into the nursery. We chose a blush wallpaper that’s subtle, but that has a soft texture. The neutral rug also has a textured look as well. We wanted the room to feel modern and clean, so we used a white acrylic crib and white changing table, along with the white nursery glider.

The window treatments in this nursery design needed to be blackout, as we usually recommend. This client wanted to have custom drapery made to match the other drapes in her home, so we helped her decide those specifics. Custom drapery is always great since it allows for so much design flexibility, but can be very pricey. Luckily there are a ton of great readymade options out there—check out our post on Blackout Curtains for the Nursery.

We balanced the silver accents with some more natural touches like the storage bin and artwork, and added blush decor throughout. We also added some greenery with the faux olive tree and the faux peonies. These little touches really make the room come together.

Every now and then a project will come along that’s a little different. We work on so many nursery designs and a fair amount of kid’s rooms, but rarely do we do them at the same time. A Virtual Design client needed a room designed for her two girls that were going to share a space. The house was brand new and they weren’t bringing anything with them, so we started from scratch.

She knew she wanted a soft wallpaper with a greenery/nature feel, and lots of neutrals with some pops of blush pink. We started with this beautiful eucalyptus leaves removable wallpaper and a house shaped bed to give the older sister a sense of her own space within the shared room. Since the room was functioning as a nursery as well, she definitely still needed blackout curtains, so we chose some with a pretty texture to give the room an elevated feel.

As you can see in the floor plan above, this space was a little tricky. As with most nurseries and kid’s rooms, this space was on the smaller side, and had an odd angled wall. The two windows prevented us from putting the crib near that area for safety reasons. The crib is also closest to the door, which will come in handy if the baby needs tending without disturbing her sister in the bed.

Luckily there were two large closets to use in the room which worked out great since we didn’t have room for a dresser. The crib has some storage drawers at the bottom which will help a little for smaller baby items, and we added some wall shelves as well for a small display. There is also a neutral storage bin and a pretty blush storage bin to help with bulkier items.

As for decor, we went for some Scandinavian inspired rainbow art pieces that coordinate with the cute soft rainbow bedding. A nightstand and side table also add some additional functionality, and a surface for a lamp, small plant, etc. Since the space was small, we chose a large neutral rug to give the floor a more expansive look. Overall, I love how this space came out and think it will work great for these sisters!

Neutral nursery designs have been super popular this year, and I have another nursery e-design to reveal that’s neutral with black and white, and super adorable. My client wanted a space that felt both neutral and a little fun with some contrast. She didn’t have a specific theme in mind, but wanted it to feel sweet and cozy.

The nursery is often a small space, and that was the case here. We didn’t have a ton of room, so we had to make use of the space as best we could. Luckily, there was a nice wall for the crib with no safety issues, so that’s where we started. We had room for a changing table, but needed to find one that wasn’t too large so we also had room for a diaper pail (pro tip: always make sure you have room on the floor next to the changing table for this!).

My client also wanted to incorporate a wallpaper accent wall, but since the space was small, we didn’t want to overwhelm the space. We chose a sweet little black and white wallpaper—since the pattern in small, it will give the wall interest without being overwhelming.

For a little fun, we added a bolder rug with a black and white pattern, and some curtains with a soft stripe as well. The nursery glider is a solid neutral to balance the patterns, and it’s also a petite size to fit in this space.

We had a little room left for some storage on one of the walls, so we went with a slim bookcase. That way, there will be space for books and some smaller toys. There is also a storage basket next to the crib which can be used for larger toy storage or bulkier items.

I think my favorite thing in this nursery is the overalls artwork over the crib—I just love how cute it is! The great thing about this piece is that it’s available as an art print or a canvas. We opted for a canvas since it’s going over the crib, so there is no need to frame it.

It’s the first Virtual Design reveal of the year! By the looks of things on my calendar, this year is going to be another record breaker for Virtual Design nurseries. The design below was from a client in New York, all the way on the other coast of the country.

This client came to me with an idea of doing a whimsical art piece with a surrealist feel. After a few options, we landed on this Whimsical Artwork piece from artist Paul Bond. We were looking for something with mostly blues and greens since my client wanted the nursery to flow with the rest of their home (which had similar colors). I then sprinkled in our accent colors using a subtle abstract rug, a light blue pouf, a solid moss colored crib sheet and lots of natural greenery. I decided to punch up the color with pops of orange found in the artwork and chose some orange decor and accessory items.

The shape of this room was really tricky. It was long and skinny and had a super high ceiling. Like, really high. In order to help visually bring the ceiling down, I suggested a half-paint method where the walls are painted up to about 10′ in one color, and then the rest of the way up and the ceiling in another. It helps to break up the space and add visual interest.

Nurseries in areas with colder climates also sometimes have room heaters or radiators (not so much here in California). See that thing in the design board above that looks like a toy chest? That’s actually a radiator cover. It’s built into the wall, so we had to design the floor plan of the nursery around it. We hung wall shelves above it and used its surface to display some decorative items (being careful not to actually block the vents).

That’s perhaps my favorite part about designing nurseries in other states—there are so many interesting challenges based on location alone!

It seems like e-designs have become very popular in nursery design lately as technology is allowing interior designers to work across the country remotely. I’ve been getting more and more requests for nursery e-designs, and I just love how it allows me to create a nursery space for anyone, no matter where they live. I was contacted by a client who wanted a very specific look in her nursery—all white. This is actually much more of a challenge than it may seem! As anyone knows who has ever tried to choose a white paint color, there are hundreds of shades of white, and they all have a subtle yet different undertone. Matching whites can be very difficult, especially when ordering products online.

But before we get into the color, or lack thereof, we needed to nail down the floor plan. This client had a large space with high ceilings and a unique curved wall. The floor plan came together fairly easily, as there was really only one wall that would work for the crib. Putting the crib on any of the other walls would have either blocked a walkway, a sight line, or posed a safety hazard (such as in front of the window).

My client knew she already wanted to use the Oeuf Sparrow Crib in, of course, white. I didn’t want the design to feel overly coordinated since we were already limited on color, so I opted to choose the other furniture pieces from different brands. Here is where matching whites comes in. The key here is to include enough variety that each white may be slightly different, but the eye won’t land of any one thing in particular. The problem happens when 95% of the items are the exact same shade of white and then one item is off and stands out like a sore thumb. An advantage we had in this room was the size of the space. None of the major furniture pieces are cramped directly next to each other, which makes it harder to tell if they are even off at all. In person, everything blends nicely.

As I was choosing the smaller accessory items, I kept in mind that her taste was modern, and that she wanted some celestial elements as well. Rather than bringing in an accent color, I brought in some contrast by using silver and gray so the room wouldn’t feel too overwhelmingly white.

By mixing sleek modern items and straight lines with curved and softer items with some celestial whimsy, the nursery feels fresh and bright, but not boring. Even though this nursery was an e-design, the client actually lived nearby, so I was able to photograph the space. Stay tuned to see the final photos!
