Sometimes the biggest challenge in nursery design isn’t the style or the color or even choosing the right products. It’s the floor plan. The nursery is often the smallest room in the home, a repurposed guest room or office, or even a shared space. In the case of this recent Virtual Nursery Design, the client came to us with a small nursery space that didn’t have a closet.

It’s not common for a bedroom to be built without a closet, but it does happen, especially in older homes that have gone through many remodels. This was the case for this client—the only room they had to use as the nursery was only about 10 feet by 10 feet and it was missing the closet. That meant we had to figure out a way to not only fit the crib, dresser and glider, but include some type of storage as well.
Luckily, this client was open to doing custom built-ins! We were able to use the back wall where the crib goes to build out small but impactful cabinets to serve as a closet. The client sent us a photo of the progress below.
After we finalized the design of the custom built-ins and the striped wallpaper, we were able to focus on the nursery furniture and decor. Since this is a small room, we chose a light wood convertible crib that starts out as a bassinet and then converts to the full size shown in the design board. We didn’t have room for a full size dresser, so we chose a small but gorgeous textured blue dresser. We added in a neutral motorized glider and an ottoman with storage inside, which is already a bonus in a small nursery space.
Then for the details! We wanted to add a little more dimension to this space and prevent it from feeling too nautical, so we included some soft sage green and gold as well. The sailboat artwork over the crib has that touch of green which then balances the sage green sconces on the opposite wall. We just love how this nursery design came together!
