While the neutral nursery design trend has morphed a bit over the past few years, our clients are still loving variations on the neutral theme. But instead of whites and creams, clients are requesting deeper tones like beiges, tans and browns.

We created this earthy nursery design below for a client who wanted lots of those warm and cozy vibes, but still with an overall neutral feel. They had a city apartment with a view, and wanted the design to be modern and transitional with an elevated feel. Take a look at how we brought this design concept together!

A Mocha Nursery Design with Earthy Browns and Neutral

We wanted to bring in some depth to an otherwise neutral design, so we started with a dark wood walnut crib. Across the board, we’ve been seeing more clients leaning toward darker tones of wood for their nursery furniture. This particular crib has gold feet too! We had space for a larger dresser in this space, so we chose a mix-matched raffia textured dresser with rounded edges to bump up the sophistication. Whenever possible, we always use a larger dresser since all that storage and surface space is invaluable in a nursery!

We chose a rug in a soft neutral, but then went with a more mocha color on the walls to give the space some dimension and earthiness. Choosing a paint color in this tan/mocha family can be tricky since some of them can have hidden green or yellow tones. It’s super important to test them out on your actual walls so you can see how the color reacts to the lighting in your home.

We wanted this earthy nursery to have an organic feel, so we added in an asymmetrical wall mirror and some neutral abstract art with those same shapes over the crib. This piece is a canvas, so no frame needed! Canvas art is much safer to hang over a crib since it’s so lightweight—but it still needs to be secured!

We filled in the rest of the design with lots of other warm and cozy details, like the brown blackout curtains, large neutral glider, faux stone side table, and rattan storage bin. We also added some wall shelves in dark wood to balance the dark wood crib.
