Every now and then I’ll have a Virtual Design client who has very big design ideas. I’ve been fortunate to work with this client before on two of her daughter’s rooms, and this time I got to design a new nursery for her twins! I’ve designed lots of twins nurseries over the years, and the biggest challenge is always fitting in all the furniture. An extra crib might not seem like it would take up that much more space, but it really does! Luckily, this client had a large room with lots of natural light and all the furniture fit just perfectly.
After we nailed down the room and the furniture placement, we got into the fun design details. She already had a fun black and white swirling wallpaper pattern and wanted to work the rest of the design around it. But, she didn’t want just a black and white nursery. So added in lots of color to make sure the space didn’t feel too stark and modern.

The other walls were painted white, so we started there. Pale blue walls added just a touch of color to the nursery without it feeling overwhelming. We also needed a large patterned rug to cover the wood floor, and chose one with lots of neutral tones, slate blue and a beautiful coral color. The coral might feel unexpected for a nursery, but it balances the slate blue perfectly and adds warmth to the black and white.
Since the wallpaper had a black pattern, we did want to balance that. Since we needed two cribs, I chose black nursery furniture that had acrylic details so it didn’t overwhelm the space with too much black. The acrylic really helps the whole nursery feel open and airy! The modern black dresser on the opposite wall has a sleek gray mirror above it which also reflects the gray in the wallpaper (no pun intended!).

This nursery also had a very large window and two smaller windows, so blackout window treatments were a must. The client already had some gray roller shades, but we added slate blue blackout curtains to soften the entire space and tie in that blue tone. To soften things even more, we added a neutral glider recliner, a coral ottoman and matching bench, and a cozy faux sheepskin accent rug.
The last thing was the artwork! Since we had such a specific color palette, it was a little tricky to find the perfect art, but we did! There are four colorful abstract art prints above the two cribs that both have coral and blue tones, but bring in some other colors as well for a little extra pop of fun.
