One thing I hear over and over again when I start with new Virtual Design clients is that they want a sophisticated nursery. Way back when I first started as a designer, most nursery designs were more juvenile with various characters and patterns that felt like they only belonged in the nursery. But the way we live has changed, and more clients want spaces that not only reflect their personal design style, but that are versatile, transitional and serene.
The biggest advantage of having a more sophisticated nursery design is that it will blend more seamlessly with the rest of the home. If you need to move things into other rooms, or even move children into different spaces, having a more “adult” and neutral base makes this much easier to achieve. It also makes it more affordable to add in more details that are specific to a child’s changing personality when you can just switch out some decor instead of replacing wallpaper or thematic furniture.

This client wanted a soft, sophisticated nursery design with a neutral foundation so she could layer in little themes and change them as her daughter grows. For now, we added a few sweet bird accents, like the heron artwork over the crib, the little blue hummingbird art over the glider, and the pastel bird mobile. This client also loves Disney, so we threw in a little Mickey shaped pillow and snow globe. These little accents make the nursery feel soft and sweet, but they are small enough that they will be easy to change later on.

For the foundational items, we went with classic white nursery furniture that would last her through multiple children. The subtle sage green rug brings in the artwork, but will work well even if the bird elements are later changed since sage green is still considered a neutral. The scalloped wall shelves, gold wall mirror, white side table, and scalloped storage bins are all neutral and transitional pieces that can rotate into a future room. We did have a little fun with the custom blush pink blackout curtains, and also brought in some more color with the blush crib sheet and gorgeous faux peony arrangement.
