If you thought that black and white nurseries were over, well, you were wrong! Black and white is still a great option for gender neutral nurseries, and we still get lots of requests for this style. This nursery design was for an E-Design client in New York. They had a modern apartment with clean lines, and wanted to keep the space minimal but still fun.

The layout of this room was the biggest challenge (as is common with New York apartments!) The room had one entire wall with a built-in wardrobe, and a large window on another wall, so there wasn’t a lot of wall space to utilize in here. The client was fine not having a glider, since she was planning on using one in her bedroom. There is a small dresser on the wall opposite the window to use as a changing table with a little storage.

Since there wasn’t much room for a floor lamp (and no glider to hide it behind), we opted for a plug-in wall sconce to add lighting and free up floor space. We didn’t have room for a glider, so we went with a nice ottoman that’s comfortable to sit on, but that also as storage inside as a bonus!

The client wanted to keep the nursery largely black and white, but she also liked neutrals and light blue. This is actually something that we recommend doing when designing a black and white nursery—add in neutral details and natural textures to keep it feeling warm and cozy! You can see how we did that in this Scandinavian black and white nursery.

The window already had a semi-sheer roller shade on it, and we suggested adding some nice blackout drapery on top of that. Not only will that provide light protection for the nursery, but it also helps to frame the window and give the whole space a softer look.

The space artwork over the crib was something that the client received as a gift and wanted to use in the design. We pulled the little bit of light blue out of the artwork and balanced that with the light blue crib sheet. We also included the adorable rocket ship basket and planet mobile to go with the theme, but didn’t go too crazy with any other space details. We love creating themed nurseries that don’t feel overly thematic, and that can easily transition with the baby.
