In my last post, I talked about some of the popular nursery trends I’ve been seeing this year. Another one of the big ones is coastal nursery design. I’ve worked on a lot of nurseries with this theme this year—clients are asking for beachy, coastal and nautical designs even if they don’t live by the water. It must be the vacation vibe! This Virtual Nursery Design client wanted a California casual coastal nursery with lots of texture to make the room feel cozy and relaxing.

The floor plan for this nursery was a little tricky since there was a wall-mounted TV that we had to work around. That meant the only wall left for the crib was between the two smaller windows. We talked about safety and the client decided she was fine with the crib placement and would keep her shutters closed. We also skipped drapery on these windows because it would be too close to the crib.
The Perfect Wallpaper for This Coastal Nursery Design
Like so many nurseries I design, wallpaper is often a huge component. My client didn’t want to wallpaper the whole room, so we decided on the crib wall as the accent wall. I pulled a fairly bold pattern, and she loved it! The blue palm wallpaper print frames the crib perfectly and adds a lot of color without having to paint the walls.
Designer Tip: When designing a themed nursery that includes wallpaper, choose a pattern that’s on the sophisticated side so it will still be versatile when your child is older. Wallpaper is an investment, so make sure it’s something you’ll want to look at for years to come.
Layering Texture for a Relaxed Coastal Feel
One of the ways we made this coastal nursery design feel relaxed and casual was by layering texture throughout the space. Texture adds warmth and coziness which is especially important in a nursery. For this space, we layered various textures like the raffia textured dresser, woven storage bin, rattan while toy bin, rattan scalloped light fixture, wicker sailboat wall decor, and the faux sheepskin accent rug. None of these textures match exactly, but they are balanced in the room, which adds to the relaxed feel.
Playing With Mixed Patterns
If you look closely, you’ll see that this nursery actually has a lot of pattern. The wallpaper, of course, is the statement bold and large pattern in the space. But there are also lots of other smaller patterns in the room to keep things feeling interesting and balanced. The neutral and blue striped blackout curtains have a thin pinstripe which adds visual appeal without overwhelming the room. The blue stripe crib sheet is also a small pattern, as is the light blue pattern throw pillow.
