A cozy nursery is a space that feels inviting, a place you enjoy spending time and relaxing. You’ve likely heard of “hygge” (pronounced Hoo-gah), a borrowed word from Denmark. While it can be heard to explain the exact meaning, it essentially refers to the feeling of well-being. This is something we always strive to achieve in all our nursery designs! We use things like fluffy textures, soft lighting, layered textiles, and earthy tones to give our designs that cozy feel. Here are some items you can incorporate into your nursery design for a dash of hygge!

Cozy Nursery Decor & Furniture

1. Faux Sheep Skin Rug: Layering rugs in the nursery creates a soft and cozy look. You’ve probably seen this faux sheepskin rug in many of our designs! Try pairing this rug with one of our favorite warm earth tone rug nursery rugs.

2. Ceramic Cup: We had to add a little something symbolic for the parents because ‘hygge’ can also mean a favorite treat or snack. It can be great for a parent to have their favorite drink in a cute mug for comfort during some of those long nights.

3. Rose Velvet Blackout Curtains: We use blackout curtains in the majority of our nursery designs. They can be super helpful in creating an environment for good sleep, but drapery also adds an element of coziness to the room.

4. Weighted Chunky Knit Throw: We love this chunky knit blanket for when a parent nap is needed in the nursery. It’s made of soft jersey and is weighted, which can have a calming effect. Just make sure not to use weighted blankets for children as they can be a safety issue.

5. Striped Bolster Pillow: We fell for this collection of striped bolster pillows. A fun pillow with a texture or pattern can help pull a design together. Adding pillows or a couple of pieces that just feel like you can make a nursery feel cozy and give a personalized feel. Pillows in the nursery should only be on the glider though—no pillows in the crib!

6. High Contrast Picture Book: A few pretty picture books make great decor, but also reading together with your child is also one the best ways to add a little hygge. For more decorative books, see our post on Beautiful Books for the Nursery.

7. White Table Lamp: A small table lamp creates soft light for a cozy bedtime routine. Add a table lamp to a dresser, a side table or shelf.

8. Classic Teddy Bear: We love this little brown teddy bear, and if you follow us you have probably seen it make an appearance in several of our nursery designs. One or two high quality stuffed animals can make for the coziest dash of hygge as both decor and toy.

9. Oversized Sea Star: We are pretty smitten with this sweet, textured, and oversized sea star. It’s a playful piece of decor and will be fun for your little one to explore when they are ready.

10. Striped Floor Cushion: We love a floor cushion for a second parent or eager sibling during floor play time. This sage striped cushion is super cute and comes in other subtle colors too.

11. Walnut Side Table: This warm walnut wood side table is such a pretty piece. It from WORMLEY by Aloka that specializes in modern pieces, many with one-of-a-kind vintage fabrics. We chose this because adding hygge sometimes means finding something unique that feels like you! Find more side table inspiration from our Favorite Side Tables for the Nursery post.

12. Floor Lamp: Floor lamps are great in a nursery for extra lighting, particularly by the glider. We love the curved lines and the peachy color of this lamp. Make sure your floor lamp is sturdy and won’t topple over as your little one learns to pull up to stand. You can always move it out of the nursery when your baby hits that stage.

We hope you feel inspired to add a little hygge to your nursery and kid’s rooms!
