As a nursery designer, I make sure that every nursery we design has a good side table. Even if it’s a small piece, having a nursery side table next to your glider gives you a spot for a bottle, small lamp or even just your phone. Since nurseries are often small, we always try to maximize the storage if possible. Believe it or not, there are a lot of side tables out there with storage! When I was writing my book, Your Perfect Nursery, I included a section about side tables specifically because they are often an overlooked piece.

First, we always look for sturdy side tables that won’t tip over easily and that can sit on top of a rug without wobbling. And, of course, nothing with sharp edges (so round side tables are usually a good choice). The other key to nursery design is storage! Whenever possible, we try to combine storage with other furniture items (like storage ottomans). Side tables are a great option since you’ll need one anyway and may as well get some bonus storage out of it! Find some of our favorite side tables with storage below that are nursery-friendly, stylish and functional.

1. Oak Rattan Side Table: We absolutely love this side table. The lid makes the storage look seamless and the rattan texture gives the table an airy and coastal look. A drum style side table is typically one of the more sturdy choices since it has no sharp edges and a solid base.

2. Modern Two Tone Side Table: Modern nursery design is still on trend we’ll be seeing it for years. This white and light wood side table has storage space at the base and a cute modern design.

3. Walnut Wood Side Table: Traditional nursery furniture has become so popular, and we love the spindle detail on this gorgeous walnut nightstand. This table comes in lots of colors to match any nursery decor, and the little drawer is perfect for hiding away small items.

4. Fluted Oak Side Table: This is an understated round side table with fluted details with a nod to the Scandinavian style. A seamless hidden door with a soft-close function gives access to a storage space.

5. Black and Cane Storage Side Table: This black and cane side table is a great piece to add contrast to your nursery design. The cane detail feels airy and doesn’t take up too much visual space. The storage inside is perfect for storing bulkier items like blankets or stuffed animals.

6. Wood Side Table With Drawer: This is a petite option for a compact space. This charming little side table has a laid-back cane detail with a small drawer. Sometimes just the smallest amount of extra storage helps!

7. Tiered Wood Side Table: We love this one! It feels like a timeless piece with a gorgeous tiered shape and soft wood finish. The open shelves are perfect for a decorative basket or some pretty books.

8. White Scalloped Side Table: We are pretty smitten with this little night stand. It has a drawer and shelf that offer extra storage and the scalloped detail would be adorable in a nursery. It comes in a walnut wood version as well.

9. Traditional Sage Green Side Table: This stunner is a more traditional design with a larger footprint. The drawer gives it some storage and the traditional style is beautiful. It comes in sage green and a soft neutral wood tone.

10. Elephant Side Table: This adorable wicker elephant side table is playful and will easily transition into a playroom. It’s perfect for holding swaddle blankets or a few toys, and the whimsical shape will encourage your little one to help clean up their toys!

11. Organic Storage Side Table: The playful and gorgeous organic shape gives this side table a sculptural feel. It’s a multi-use piece of furniture that can definitely grow with your child.

12. Rattan Storage Side Table: This side table has a warm rattan finish with loads of storage inside. The rattan texture naturally has lots of depth and interest, and would work for a nursery with a rustic feel. This one also comes in a darker rattan finish too.

1. Fluted Ivory Storage Side Table: This fluted table is the perfect piece for hiding toys and blankets. The lid comes off and you can easily store items inside.

2. Cane Side Table with Shelves: Cane detail is so gorgeous for nurseries. It works as a neutral piece but adds texture. The little shelves on this table are perfect for books and decor.

3. Rattan 3-Tier Table: If you want a more rustic texture or a bohemian look, this little table has 3 tiers for storing items.

4. Mango Wood Side Table with Drawer: If you want a more traditional look, a storage side table like this one in a dark wood adds sophistication and a refined look.

5. Upholstered Storage Side Table: This might be the perfect piece for a nursery! It’s padded and has storage inside, and comes in a ton of colors to match your decor.

6. Light Wood Storage Table: This side table gives you the option to have open or closed storage. We love the light wood delicate fluting detail.

7. Soft Storage Side Table: This table is another perfect option for the nursery since it’s soft and super affordable. It comes in lots of fun colors too.

8. Slate Blue Side Table: A single shelf can add more storage than you think, especially if you add a storage basket. We love this slate blue color, and this sweet side table comes in four other colors too.

9. Light Wood Side Table: This modern and clean table comes in a few gorgeous wood shades with a single shelf.

10. Cane Open Shelf Table: This is another great option for those cane-lovers. It has open shelving for little items in a warm wood tone.

11. Modern Storage Side Table: Love a shiny lacquer? This modern side table has a swivel lid to hide items inside. It comes in two pretty wood tones.

12. Round Cane Side Table: Can you tell we like cane details? We love that this table has the cane detail all the way around.

There are a few different camps of people when it comes to organization. Some are more chaotic, some appear chaotic while actually being organized in their own way, and others are just plain organized. I fall into the third category, which is why I get along with Jamie and Fillip of Horderly. I met them years ago when they were in California working on expanding their amazing professional organizing company. So when Jamie announced she was pregnant, I got a call from her!

Since they live on the East Coast, I did a nursery E-Design for them. Jamie’s style is soft and subtle, and she wanted a nursery that was clean, classic, neutral, and you guessed it, organized. Take a look at how their very organized nursery came out below!

The biggest challenge in this nursery design was the floor plan. As you can see, we ended up with the dresser/changing table in the corner and the glider in front of the radiator. There were a lot of doors and windows in here so we didn’t have a lot of usable wall space. We chose a small framed glider so there would be room to glide back and forth, and paired that with a very light weight ottoman that can be pushed out of the way for playtime.

For the crib wall, we chose some wall sconces in a pretty brass and white to add a little light to the room. Behind them is a soft, neutral stripe wallpaper. We just did the wallpaper on this wall as an accent instead of bringing it all around the room. A large faux olive tree sits in the corner to bring some greenery and life into the nursery. If you’ve been following LCI, you know we love to use plants!

As mentioned above, we used a small glider in here since we had the radiator behind it. There was a great little window seat in here as well that now has a custom cushion on it to coordinate with the wallpaper and overall design. We also added two sweet little wall art prints above the glider which help to bring in the green that’s in other spots as well.

For the changing table, we opted for a green framed piece with caning detail. It really helps to add come contrast to this white space, and the texture is gorgeous! There is a neutral silicone changing pad on top and a small lamp for those late nights.

And of course, the organizing! Jamie added bamboo drawer organizers to the dresser to carefully organize all the little clothing. She also put some small bins in the closet and around the room, and kept things clean and simple.

We’ve got another round of popular baby and kid’s products for you today! A few of times a year, we gather up products from our designs and blog posts that we shared online and on Instagram that caught your attention. This is always fun because we love to see what our audience favors and it helps us be better designers! It also helps us to continue to share nursery furniture and decor that fits your style and preferences. This time, removable wallpaper stole the show! Below are the nursery and kid’s room products that created the most buzz in the last couple of months.

Neutral Sand Removable Wallpaper: This neutral sand toned removable wallpaper might seem really subtle at first glance, however it makes such a difference in the room. It has a printed texture and movement that adds interest and makes this nursery stand out. It’s also peel and stick, so it will peel right down off the walls. Butterfly and Peonies Wall Art: We used this set of art prints in this blush and gold girls bedroom E-Design and they are just gorgeous! The watercolor look is soft and subtle and the simplistic shapes feel sophisticated. Wall art can be a great way of incorporating a theme or an accent color in a subtle or minimalistic way. Using decor to add to the theme also makes it easy to update as your child grows. Buying art prints online for a nursery is great too because you can frame them up to match your aesthetic— gold, white, light wood, whatever other wood tones or metallics you are using.

Chinoiserie Removable Wallpaper: Another removable wallpaper got lots of attention! This pattern has a soothing shade of light blue and slivery metallic sheen. In person, it leans more toward silver. This is another peel and stick wallpaper so it’s not permanent. Chinoiserie in general seems to be coming back recently and we’ve been doing a lot of wallpapers in this style. This particular one is also custom printed to fit your space, so you don’t have to worry about sizing.

Navy Brush Stroke Decals: Yet another removable wall decor options, these muted blue abstract wall decals were viewed a ton on the blog. The blue tones feel sophisticated and create a bold look. We absolutely love the way the decals look with the rich walnut wood crib and gray tones in this nursery. These decals allowed us to work with a deeper shade of blue without overwhelming the space (it was also a small room). Drawer Organizers: Have you been Marie Kondo-ing your life or binging The Home Edit recently? Then this one is for you! Organizing a drawer full of teeny baby clothes is no joke! These drawer spacers will make the task much easier for your changing table or nursery dresser. You can change the spacing of these as your little one grows and they are expandable as well. We use these all the time in nursery designs, like the ones above from our Black and White Scandinavian Nursery.

It is rare that I come across a client who says they have too much storage in the nursery. You can never have enough! And just when you think you have enough, you don’t. Rather than overload the design with storage cubes and bookcases, I like to try to work in creative storage that will enhance the overall feel. Enter wall hooks. No matter how much furniture and decor you already have in your nursery, there is always a little bit of empty wall space to add in a hook or knob. Whether it be between closet doors, next to a window, or even on the door itself, there is bound to be a free spot. I love suggesting hooks and knobs to store items like towels, a diaper bag, or ring slings. You’d be surprised at how many creative uses you will come up with! Here are a few of my favorites below.

1. Gleaming Safari Busts: Do you remember the gold safari animal figurines that were wildly popular a few years ago? These are pretty much the hook form of this line. These busts are perfect for an animal themed nursery.

2. Beech Wall Hooks: I love the rawness of a light wood finish. The scale of sizes make these especially interesting. These feel a lot more sturdy and would be great for heftier items.

3. Cast Iron Cactus Hook: I really liked the rustic style of these cactus hooks. I also like that this hook doesn’t feel gender specific. It would easily work into a variety of themes.

4. Totemic Hook Rack: I especially love this bohemian style hook rack. You can easily fit this piece onto a spare wall and can maximize hanging storage needs.

5. Copper Fern Hook: I wanted to include a few styles that felt a bit more mature. Hooks are equally as useful in children’s and adult’s spaces! The copper detailing paired with the raw stone work makes this one extra special.

6. West Slope Knob: These are a classic favorite of mine. Maybe they are not the most striking of styles but I love the modern and minimal feel. Rejuvenation is a brand I always find myself scouring for hardware, so I couldn’t leave this find out for those who want a modern and classic feel.

7. Night Sky Wall Hooks: These night sky hooks have just enough flare and take to a more modern play on a solar theme. These also work really well as wall decor. I would like to see them incorporated into a gallery wall for functional interest!

8. Brass Rabbit Hook: If you have followed along on blog, you know how much I love anything animal themed. These rabbit hooks are the sweetest! They are available in both a brass and a bronze finish so you can mix and match.

9. Wooden Cloud Hooks: I really was drawn to the cookie cutter effect of these cloud shaped hooks. They couldn’t be more simple but the style is so precious. These hooks clustered on a wall would double as a decorative touch as well.

10. Mid Century Double Hook: If you are in need of a color pop, these Mid Century hooks are the perfect find! I really like red in small bursts, so I can’t wait to use these in a future design. These are also really great for matching to fit whatever your color scheme may be.

Over the years, I’ve worked on over 200 design projects (although I haven’t done a full count in a while, so it’s probably more now!). In all that time, I’ve only worked with a handful that didn’t have some kind of space challenge in the nursery. Very few people purchase a home with a nursery in mind. Therefore, typically, the nursery is the smallest room in the house—a guest room, office, or even a corner of the master bedroom that needs to be converted. Even in more spacious rooms, the placement of doors and windows can create issues for the layout, especially since there are added safety concerns in nurseries.

Fortunately, more and more vendors are offering solutions to help with these common concerns, and pieces for small spaces are becoming easier to find. In addition, there are a few tips and tricks that I have discovered over the years that help to make space planning a nursery easier. Here are a few of my favorites…

Mini Cribs

Mini cribs are a perfect solution for smaller spaces. The size of these pieces makes them usable for up to two years while saving a considerable amount of space. As an added bonus, a lot of mini cribs have casters on the feet, so you can roll them around the house to be used in different rooms. The smaller size makes this piece perfect for a corner of the master bedroom in place of a bassinet. You can then move the crib to the nursery when you’re ready to transition whereas regular size cribs are too large to fit through the door – eliminating this as an option. Do make sure to measure your doorway if you plan to do this, even for a mini crib! For more info on mini cribs, check out this post I wrote about some of my favorite ones.

Keep It Light and Bright

Dark colors can make a space feel smaller, so if you’re working with a small room, keep the walls a light color. Another way to enhance the brightness of a space is to utilize the natural light. If you have a window, keep the curtains open when you can. Add a table lamp or a floor lamp if your natural light isn’t great, and add a nice wall mirror to bounce the light around. Then, position furniture strategically to take advantage of the light.

Vertical Storage

Use your walls for storage! Walls are an underutilized area of most rooms. Vertical space is just as valuable as floor space! There are a lot of products now that are shallow enough so they don’t stick out into the room, but still provide much needed storage. Book ledges are a great option if you don’t have room for a bookcase. You can also make use of wall hooks, small wall cabinets and floating shelves.

Use the Nursery For Sleeping Only

If your nursery space is really tight, you can always locate the changing station in the living room or bathroom. It’s not the most convenient, but it works in a pinch. You can also get creative with storage. For example, keep toys in a storage bench in the living room—I particularly like this idea because is accomplishes two things: 1. It keeps playtime in the rooms where you are more likely to be able to supervise, and 2. It provides the opportunity to teach your baby how to clean up and put toys away since they are in a shared area.

Keep It Organized

Clutter makes a room feel smaller. If you have a small space, keep it organized and clean! You can use boxes and bins to store toys and clothes, and keep things that are out folded and neat. Just make sure that placement is intentional and the the location of items works functionally for your needs.

Maximize The Closet

Make use of every inch of closet space! You may need to adapt your closet to work functionally for your own nursery. To do so, add in an extra wardrobe bar, use some storage bins, and write out the type of items you need to store beforehand to determine the storage needs that work best for you (and keep in mind that it will change with baby). Flexibility is key!
