We are quickly moving into the holiday season and surely I’m not the only one who thinks this year flew by! This week, I’m pausing the slew of nursery design reveals we have been posting lately (which are so fun for me to finally get to share btw!). Instead, this post will highlight some of the readers’ favorite products from September and October.

If you follow along regularly, you have probably seen one of two of these posts earlier in the year. My job as a nursery designer comes lots of browsing, online shopping, trying out and installing all sorts of furniture, and decor for nurseries and kid’s rooms. I share my favorite finds here and on Instagram too, and a post like this features the furniture, lighting, and decor that’s been getting the most attention from the blog and social media. Let’s jump right in and see what YOUR favorites have been lately.

Rattan Changing Basket

We used this rattan changing basket in this Black and White Nursery design. Adding rattan, caning or a natural wood color to a space can help add warmth and texture. This is such a cute piece to help keep a changing table or dresser looking neat and organized. Velvet Rocking Chair

I typically use gliders in most of our nursery designs, but every now and then we’ll have a client who wants a rocking chair instead. This one was from our Rocker Roundup post and has been very popular with readers! It comes in a few different colors like a velvet vintage rose, but this this deep emerald green is my favorite. The backrest is slightly reclined with low armrests, and it has a gentle rocking motion.

Round White Side Table

The pretty round white side table has been consistently popular for a while. It’s such a versatile side table, has a nice sturdy wide base and no sharp edges—all things I look for when selecting a side table for a glider or rocker for a nursery. This table was featured in our Side Table Roundup from earlier this year and has since become one of the most popular pieces from the list! It’s made of aluminum and is hollow which makes it lightweight and easy to move. It also comes in a gorgeous gold if you are looking to add metallic details to your space.

Soft Pink Dot Wallpaper

A few months back, we did a roundup of our favorite removable wallpapers for nurseries and kids. This sweet soft pink wallpaper with the white dot design was included and turned out to be the fan favorite! This feminine, simple pattern is perfect for a more subtle wallpaper choice. It’s versatile and could easily transition from a nursery to a girl’s room. This one is of course removable, but it’s also available in a traditional wallpaper (along with lots of color options).

Rattan Side Table

This charming rattan side table is made of natural rattan, compact in size, and could be a great option for a smaller nursery by the glider or rocker. This table has some cute boho vibes but it’s versatile at the same time. It could be great for a gender neutral nursery design, or pretty much any design that could use a natural touch. Linen Blackout Curtains

One of the nursery design questions I get asked most frequently is about window treatments, specifically blackout curtains. This luxurious linen blend in a neutral white color with the french pleating feels elegant, easy and versatile. Blackout curtains can really make all the difference for a sleeping baby. This shop will actually let you customize the blackout lining so you can create something just right for your space! Installing quality window treatments will help really make a room look complete!

Choosing the perfect nursery rocker is one of the most important decisions you will make for your nursery design. So many expecting parents underestimate the amount of time they will spend in this seat! Unfortunately this can also be one of the most expensive elements of the design. Whether you are buying for yourself or for a lucky parent-to-be, selecting a rocker or rocking chair that is beautiful, functional, and that fits in the budget can be a challenge! I have created a list below of my favorite nursery rockers that span a range of budgets and styles. Hopefully this list will lead you towards the rocker you have been searching for!

1. Schlenker Rocking Chair: The uniqueness of this rocker comes from the combination of a more traditional tufted back paired with an industrial-modern leg. The deeper gray fabric is luxurious and easy to clean.
2. Haverhill Rocking Chair: There is so much character hiding in this vintage inspired rocker with a Mid-Century vibe. This piece feels like a tried and true heirloom in the best way possible!
3. Marcas Rocking Chair: The fabric of a rocking chair is so important for comfort, and velvet has to be one of my favorites! I also like that the base is a bright chrome. While gold is a super popular accent metallic, not everyone loves gold, so it’s nice to have a silver option as well.
4. Lullaby Rocking Chair: This is another cozy velvet option, this time with more of a Scandinavian and minimal feel. The muted teal adds just the right intensity of color.
5. Modern Wingback Rocking Chair: I have had my eye on this piece for quite some time now. This rocker makes such a statement and brings along so much sophistication. This would be a stunning addition to a monochromatic nursery design. Black and white nurseries are gaining popularity as well!
6. Compass Rocker: The ultra mod curvature of this piece is so whimsical. The detailing of the rose gold legs is so unique, and the overall design is super sophisticated.
7. Radcliffe Rocking Chair: This rocker is such a classic and timeless piece and could work in so many different spaces. You truly can’t go wrong with this one!
8. Blush Pink Rocking Chair: If you are a fan of the Compass rocker, you will surely love this blush pink version! An extra bonus of this piece is the smaller scale that can nestle into corners and work into smaller spaces. I used the neutral version of this rocker in my navy modern nursery.
9. Tufted Wingback Rocking Chair: This is another tried and true classic piece that can work with just about every style and theme. The beige fabric adds a bit of warmth and pairs so well with light pastel accent colors.
10. Channel Rocking Chair: If you are on the lookout for a statement rocker, this is a great find. The Channel is available in a variety of bold shades of velvet and is offered at such a reasonable price point. And you all know how much I love emerald green!
11. Sleepytime Leather Rocker: Leather can often feel too heavy for a nursery, but this light and soft leather finish makes for the perfect compromise. In case you are not a fan of leather, this style is also available in upholstery.

Sometimes when I start working with a new client, they show me a favorite piece or sentimental item that they love and want to use as their nursery inspiration. They have the inspiration item, but don’t know exactly how to pull a whole room design from it. This can be anything from an old photograph to a piece of furniture, but either way, it can be daunting to pull a whole room design together.

Below is a nursery design board that I created around a single piece – the rocking chair. The legs of the chair have a vintage feel in a warm white, so I chose the crib and dresser to flow with that look. The main colors on the fabric are blue and fuchsia, so I chose blue as the main color and fuchsia as an accent color. To pull in the floral pattern on the cushion, I included some other nature inspired pieces, like the artwork, throw pillow and light fixture.

There are a few things that I always consider when I’m using a client’s favorite piece or a sentimental item as the inspiration for a space. Here are my tips on how to design a nursery around a single item.

1. Choose an item that has a color scheme you like. If your inspiration item is orange and yellow, but you’ve been envisioning a blue and green nursery, you might consider using that item as an accent, and not as the main inspiration piece. You can still showcase a special item in another way, like displayed on a shelf or framed on the wall.

2. Choose a few colors, but not necessarily all of them. If your item is multi-colored, you don’t have to use every color in your nursery. Choose two or three colors, using one as the main color and one or two more as accent colors.

3. You can also take inspiration from pattern or texture. If your item has a pattern or texture, you can use that as the inspiration as well. For example, if you have an antique wood cradle, you can use the same wood texture or wood grain in other areas. If you have a blanket with a butterfly pattern on it, you can use butterflies in other areas of the space.

4. You don’t have to use the actual item. If you have an item that isn’t really your style or isn’t functional for you, but is sentimental, you can use the idea of it to create a theme. For example, if you have a vintage crib that has been in your family but may not be safe anymore, you can still create a nursery with the same vintage feel using new pieces to keep the memory alive. You can take a photograph of the original crib and display it somewhere in the room.
